the road, finally

after several months of pining and anxious waiting, i've got to see it. first thing first: viggo deserves an oscar for his performance. also, he's very heroic, which of course matches my theory with libra actors which are good at playing heroes, especially that type of heroes who sacrifice their lives for another (unlike leo sam worthington). also, they're good at being devious, refined villains (like michael douglas), but let's get back to the road.
it's dark, gritty and heartbreaking. it's about humanity loosing its humanity and abandoning hope in general. then, there's viggo who refuses to give up hope. even when dying on the beach he doesn't abandon his quest. and he's being very convincing at being human, that is, being awesomely heroic and also being paranoid, afraid, mad, and fighting for their survival. guess i loved a lot the fact that there were no definite bad guys. okay, you have cannibals, but then again... this was the world crumbling to pieces and general despair.
one minor detail i am not so sure about was the casting of the child. let me explain. in all american movies kids are terribly precocious and stuff and i don't like that. ok, one might argue that in this situation being mature beyond his years was not such a far-fetched, quite the contrary... yet, as i said, there was something artificial about kodi smith (and he will be playing oskar. i am still so appalled by the remake of "let the right one in". of course it does not stand a chance against the original, what was in you head hollywood!!)
and now i'm off to see "bright star", where keats dies tragically.

later edit: OMFG, rotten tomatoes thinks "avatar" (you know, pocahontas with blue cat-like aliens. the one with the "look at the expensive cgi, viewer, because we have no plot and no characters to speak of. LOOK AT THE EXPENSIVE CGI GODDAMIT!!". the one where the script is basically a long string of cliches ) is better than "the road". i am officially mystified and appalled.
later later edit: a critic dared to compare avatar to lord of the rings. he should be hanged in a public place.
